Letter from the Editors

This past fall a few of us students were approached with an idea to start a student academic journal at Manhattan College. The faculty members asked us what we wanted it to be. At first we were confused. What is any academic journal? It’s just a collection of articles like every other journal we have used in the Works Cited pages of the assignments we have written for classes. However, we soon realized that that was not enough. A group of us students met to discuss what the project would be, and through that process we realized that what we were doing was exactly what the journal should be. It should be a dialogue, a conversation. This journal is not just a collection of essays but a sharing of ideas.

The word logos has been associated with academic pursuits since the time of the ancient Greek philosophers. Some associated it with reason, others with the divine. The sophists used it to refer to rhetorical discourse. Most basically logos has to do with words. Ultimately, our project Logos: A Liberal Arts Academic Journal is a sharing of words. We want to build a forum for academic discourse among the students of Manhattan College.

The other goal that we have for Logos is to give students valuable experience that can help inform future career decisions. The journal will get students considering a future in academia involved in the peer review process. It will also give students interested in pursuing careers in print and digital media a platform on which to practice their craft.

This year’s issue is a preview issue. It includes the work of two students that have been honored by the Egan Essay Award Committee and another paper that was presented at the Eastern Psychological Association Conference. We are very proud of this first issue of Logos. We believe that the work included represents a healthy range of liberal arts study, including work in both the Humanities and the Social Sciences. We hope that students and professors alike will find this to be a valuable academic resource at Manhattan College this year and for years to come.

                                                             Sincerely,
Thomas P. Engelhart, Co-Editor in Chief
